SCULPTOR VALTIS BARKANS - BIOGRAPHY

Valtis Barkāns, born 1969 in Latvia

Has developed interest in sculpture from very young age of 5.

Spent childhood building clay and paper sculptures. Graduated from Sculpture Department of Riga Art and Design College in 1988. Further developped sculpture skills in masterclasses by Latvian sculptor Jānis Bārda and worked in Sculpture studio with Latvian sculptor Harijs Sprincis.

Valtis Barkāns graduated for Sculpture department of Art Academy of Latvia in 1995 and 2 years later acquired Master degree in Sculpture from same Academy.

For almost 20 years ( since 1997) Valtis Barkāns works at Sculpture Department of Latvian Academy of Art, teaching students and supervising development of graduation work.

From 1996 – 2008 Valtis Barkāns has worked as sculpture teacher in Sculpture Department of Riga Art and Design College.

Since 1997 Valtis actively works as independent sculptor and runs own sculpture studio where he works on sculpture projects and teaches students.

During his career Valtis has made more then 100 stone sculptures, many of them large scale- more then 1,5 m in height.

He works for both private clients and city councils, developping sculpture projects, including large bronze and stone sculptures. Some of them are open to general public in Latvian cities of Jūrmala, Ogre, Tukums and Kandava.

Valtis also works in close co-operation with City Council of Ogre and students from Art Academy of Latvia, runing summer projects for wood and stone sculptures. For 3d year already 4-6 new sculptures are Ogre, to enrich landscape of this pictoreous town.
